ACCEPTING NEW CLIENTS – NO WAIT LIST

About Maria Mattox

Maria Mattox is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) providing therapy for children, teens, and families in Northbrook. She specializes in working with anxiety, depression, ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), emotional regulation difficulties, and behavioral challenges at home and school.

Maria creates a supportive, structured, and nonjudgmental space where children and adolescents feel safe opening up. She helps clients develop practical coping skills, increase self-awareness, and build confidence in managing big emotions. Parents appreciate her collaborative style and clear communication, as she partners closely with caregivers to reinforce progress beyond the therapy room.

Education & Clinical Experience

Maria earned her Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and her Master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from DePaul University in Chicago.

Before becoming a counselor, she worked as a Registered Behavior Technician, supporting children with developmental and behavioral needs. She has experience in residential treatment, school-based settings, and private practice, giving her a well-rounded understanding of how academic, social, and family environments impact a child’s mental health.

Therapeutic Approach

Maria uses a person-centered foundation combined with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), cognitive restructuring, mindfulness strategies, and strengths-based interventions. Her approach is both warm and skill-focused, helping clients not only talk about challenges but actively practice tools they can use in everyday life.

She believes therapy should be tailored to the individual and recognizes that meaningful change happens when children, teens, and parents feel understood and supported as a team.

Outside the Office

Outside of work, Maria enjoys running, hiking, climbing, creating art, and spending time outdoors. Her appreciation for nature and creativity informs her grounded and balanced approach to life and therapy.
