2025 Goals and Resolutions: Checking in!

Well here we are, a quarter of the way through 2025- how did that happen? Earlier this year, I wrote a blog about making New Year’s Resolutions. In that blog, I talked about potential pitfalls of the “new year, new me” mindset and ways to set smaller, attainable goals. Let’s check-in on how those goals are coming along and talk about ways to course correct if you’ve gotten off track!
Getting Back on Track
We are well past the point in the year where people typically fall off of their resolutions, so if you’re in this boat, you’re not alone! It’s not too late to re-assess and reset goals for the year! What caused you to get off track? Did you over-estimate how much time you’d be able to commit to your goal? Did you set too big of a goal? How can you adjust your goals to account for these things? Do you need to change how much time you devote to your goal each day or week? Do you need to re-evaluate if your goal is attainable right now? Maybe you need to break your original goal into smaller pieces. It’s never too late to re-assess, set new goals, or start over!
Navigating Big Changes
Perhaps your year has taken an unexpected turn and your wants, needs, and goals have completely changed. Have you re-evaluated where things stand and set new goals? There’s no rule that says once you set a goal, you have to be married to it. It’s okay to change goals, especially if your circumstances have changed. It doesn’t make sense to keep a goal of getting that promotion at work if your company laid you off last week. Your training plan for that marathon is going to have to change if you’ve sprained your ankle. We can’t avoid some life circumstances and we can’t avoid that they may change our goals for the year. But, that doesn’t mean that we have to throw in the towel or abandon having goals. How can we change course and reset our goals to adjust for these new circumstances? Maybe the new goal is learn new ways to cross-train so you can rest that injury and still run the marathon. Or perhaps the goal is to reassess your career path and find new jobs that align with your professional goals. By taking time to re-evaluate and re-assess, we can give ourselves a direction and guidance when things feel uncertain.
Keeping Up the Good Work
You’ve made it through Q1 of 2025 and things are on track! First, GOOD JOB! It’s not easy to continue dedicating time and energy to challenges. Take time to reflect on what’s helped you be successful thus far. Have you found the specific motivators that work for you to keep you going? Are you seeing the progress and results you had hoped to? These are great ways to keep motivation high and progress moving forward. Even when progress towards goals is going well, it’s important to continue evaluating and reassessing. Have you made progress faster than you thought- do you need to adjust your goals for the rest of the year to account for this? What’s your plan for if you run into a roadblock in the future?
Whether you completely fell off of your resolution or things are going swimmingly, it’s always a good idea to take time to assess and evaluate how your progress towards achieving goals is going. If you’ve fallen off, it’s never too late to restart! If things are going well, how are you going to continue that momentum and prepare for obstacles when the inevitably occur? Keep up the good work and remember that no journey is perfectly straightforward and that it’s not a failure to have setbacks!
