Our Approach to Trauma Therapy
Healing from trauma is not about “getting over it.” Trauma therapy focuses on helping you feel safe, understood, and supported while working through experiences that may still be impacting your daily life, relationships, emotions, or nervous system.
At Cutting Edge Counseling of the North Shore, our therapists take a personalized and collaborative approach to trauma treatment. We understand that every person responds to trauma differently, which is why therapy is tailored to your individual experiences, goals, and comfort level.
Our therapists work to help clients:
- Understand trauma responses and triggers
- Build emotional regulation skills
- Reduce feelings of overwhelm and hypervigilance
- Improve self-esteem and self-trust
- Develop healthier coping strategies
- Rebuild a sense of safety and connection
EMDR Therapy for Trauma
Some of our therapists incorporate Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) into treatment. EMDR is an evidence-based trauma therapy approach designed to help the brain process distressing memories in a healthier and less emotionally overwhelming way.
Many individuals find EMDR helpful for:
- Childhood trauma
- Anxiety and panic
- PTSD
- Medical trauma
- Relationship trauma
- Grief and loss
- Negative self-beliefs
- Disturbing memories that feel “stuck”
EMDR does not require clients to share every detail of their experiences out loud in order to make progress. The goal is to help reduce the emotional intensity connected to painful memories while building a greater sense of stability and control.
Depending on your needs, treatment may also include:
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
- Trauma-Focused CBT
- Mindfulness-based therapy
- Somatic and grounding techniques
- Attachment-focused therapy
- Strength-based approaches
- Solution-focused therapy
Our Comprehensive Approach to Counseling for Trauma
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing)
EMDR is a powerful, evidence-based therapy for trauma. It helps the brain process distressing memories so they no longer feel overwhelming or stuck. EMDR can reduce anxiety, flashbacks, and emotional triggers—without needing to talk through every detail. It’s used with children, teens, and adults who’ve experienced everything from medical trauma to bullying, abuse, grief, or accidents.
Trauma-Informed Talk Therapy
Sometimes what’s needed most is a safe space to tell your story, feel understood, and work through the emotional impact of trauma. Our trauma-informed therapists use a blend of approaches—including CBT, DBT, and mindfulness—to help clients develop emotional safety, process difficult experiences, and build tools to move forward.

What is EMDR?
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a structured therapy approach used to help individuals process and heal from traumatic or distressing experiences. During EMDR, a therapist guides clients through specific forms of bilateral stimulation — such as eye movements, tapping, or sounds — while focusing on difficult memories or emotions.
The goal of EMDR is to help the brain reprocess experiences in a way that reduces emotional distress and allows clients to feel less “stuck” in painful memories, reactions, or beliefs.
Do I need to talk about my trauma in detail?
No. Trauma therapy moves at your pace. You will never be forced to share more than you feel comfortable discussing, and therapy often begins with building coping skills, safety, and emotional regulation before processing deeper experiences.
How do I know if trauma therapy is right for me?
You do not need a PTSD diagnosis to benefit from trauma therapy. If past experiences continue to affect your emotions, relationships, stress levels, self-esteem, or daily functioning, therapy may help you better understand and heal from those experiences.
